Diego and Frida in San Francisco: The Past is Present
Curated by Anthony Torres, Independent scholar and art writer
This exhibition at Madrone Art Bar pays homage to the trans-cultural significance of the presence of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in San Francisco in the 1930s and 1940 by connecting their cultural impact to the present.
Diego and Frida in San Francisco: The Past is Present focuses on the interconnectedness of people and histories, and aims to form linkages between the exhibiting artists’ aesthetic practices and the diverse pasts and intellectual discourses that inform the work. The exhibition also aims to demonstrate how artists’ use of formal vocabularies and techniques reveals multicultural exposures and exchanges, through blends of form and content that are represented in the contemporary works on exhibit.
This exhibition views histories of art as areas of inquiry that are in constant processes of change and negotiation, capable of addressing issues and posing questions that relate to residues of the past in the present, in the interest of intercultural dialogue. In so doing, it will honor the artistic lives of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and the diverse histories that have contributed to informing and sustaining our own lives. —AT
