This body of images is an expression of San Francisco. It’s a collective portrait of the creative people who live here, of how they think, what they value and how they imprint their identities on their environment. The story that emerges is about life in this colorful city; it’s about design and the everyday beauty of urban landscapes; and it’s a celebration of all those who let passion win over pragmatism.

For Vivienne, something serendipitous happens when there’s a mid-century car parked in front of a turn-of-the-century home framed in a vivid, 21st century photograph: A layering of eras and histories that feels almost like an imaginary place.

Vivienne Scholl is a San Francisco-based graphic designer. She lived in big cities and small towns in the northeastern U.S.—as well as a tiny, rural village in Denmark—before being lured by the call of the West. In the early 2000s, she and her now-husband Kevin set off on what was supposed to have been an extended travel adventure, and instead, they ended up falling in love with and putting down roots in San Francisco. Vivienne lives and works in the Castro.
